Ruth H. Yancovich says her husband, Henry, was a man of few words who demonstrated his gratitude through actions. After surviving multiple myeloma, he found a heartfelt way to thank Patricia A. DeFusco, MD—the Hartford Hospital oncologist who gave him more hope, more time, and a longer life.
Every year on Dr. DeFusco’s birthday, Henry would bring a dozen roses to her office. He did this for thirty years.
“He appreciated her help—she is a very special doctor who is very committed to her patients,” says Ruth. “She spends many hours on their treatment and inspires other physicians through her devotion.”
Years later, Ruth would come to know that same devotion when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Dr. DeFusco was always available to me,” says Ruth. “She consulted with me, knew all the treatments, and showed compassion and dedication. Thanks to her 15 years of care, I have prospered.”
Remembering her husband’s roses, Ruth felt compelled to express her own gratitude in a lasting way. She knew Dr. DeFusco was passionate about providing scalp cooling caps to help cancer patients preserve their hair during treatment—and ensuring those without insurance still had access.
Ruth’s generosity led to the creation of the Patricia A. DeFusco, MD Breast Cancer Fund at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at Hartford Hospital, supporting patient amenities, including scalp cooling caps.
“I wanted to thank Dr. DeFusco for providing such great care for people like Henry and me,” says Ruth. “I just hope my gift honors Dr. DeFusco’s retirement and legacy and shows how important she is to me and the others she cared for.”
“It is always incredibly moving to see the ways patients and families express their gratitude for our physicians,” said Lynn B. Rossini, Interim Chief Philanthropy Officer, Hartford HealthCare. “Ruth’s gift is a beautiful tribute to Dr. DeFusco’s compassion, dedication, and lifelong commitment to her patients, and it will bring comfort and dignity to those facing cancer for years to come.”
