A person’s zip code can be just as important as their genetic code when it comes to living a long healthy life. A stark example is Greater Hartford, where there is a 15-year difference between the life expectancy in north Hartford and West Hartford Center, which are a mere 4 miles apart.

At Hartford HealthCare, we are committed to health equity. One foundation of good health that we are focused on is healthy eating. Food insecurity is associated with some of the most serious and costly health problems in the country. In Greater Hartford, 1 in 7 adults lacks reliable access to affordable, nutritious food, which puts them at an increased risk for a variety of adverse health outcomes, including heart disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. These diseases consistently rank among the most common causes of hospitalization and emergency room visits.

The Hartford Hospital Food Farmacy is a proactive approach to our mission of improving the health and healing of the people and communities we serve. In partnership with the regional foodbank, Foodshare, Hartford Hospital patients will have access to specific healthy food items, free of charge, prescribed by their Hartford Hospital doctors.

The Food Farmacy will resemble the produce section of a typical grocery store. We are also looking to create a rooftop garden on one of Hartford Hospital’s buildings to grow fresh produce that can be used to help stock the Food Farmacy. The Hartford Hospital nutrition team will be involved with the educational elements of the Food Farmacy.
