Since 2014, the Flynn Oncology Nurse Fellowship has produced 25 “Flynn Fellows” at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at Hartford Hospital—including three graduates who were honored during a Summer 2024 ceremony:
- Grace Levin, UMASS Amherst
- Kate Heiden, University of St. Joseph (West Hartford, CT)
- Kevin Mrozinski, American International College
The Flynn Oncology Nurse Fellowship at Hartford Hospital is supported by the Flynn Foundation, which was established to honor the memory of Susan Flynn. The foundation works with several leading cancer hospitals—including Hartford Hospital—to create paid fellowships that provide nursing students with hands-on clinical experience, mentorship, and a pathway to a successful career in oncology nursing. Susan’s husband, Fred Flynn, Founder and President of The Flynn Foundation, was once again kind enough to attend the 2024 ceremony and recognize this year’s Flynn Fellows.
Family and friends knew Susan Flynn to be an extraordinary woman, a devoted wife, a loving mother, a successful business leader, and an active community volunteer. Following a courageous battle against Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer, Susan sadly passed away in May 2013 at the age of 61. Her husband was so thankful for his wife’s cancer care team that their family created the Flynn Foundation to address the critical need for more and better-prepared oncology nurses.
